Krispy Kreme To Slow Down In Opening New Branches

BusinessWorld Online:

The real American Doughnut Co., Inc., the local franchisee of doughnut chain Krispy Kreme, does not expect to match last year’s sales growth as there would be fewer new stores this year, but expects to return to profitability after incurring losses in 2008.

In a telephone interview, Carolyn T. Salud, president of Real American Doughnut, said sales would still grow substantially this year as four new stores would open this year. The company opened five Krispy Kreme stores in 2008.

Real American Doughnut’s sales rose by over two-fifths to P361.13 million last year from P252.42 million in 2007, documents from the Securities and Exchange Commission showed.

“We would be wiser and prudent this year. What’s important is that the locations we pick are triple A,” Ms. Salud said. “If you are convenient and provide continuing value, the market would continue to patronize you.”

The firm plans to open stores in Quezon City and in Manila’s Ermita district this year, hiking the number of outlets to 14.

Krispy Kreme has branches in Taguig, San Juan, Ayala Avenue in Makati, and in malls — TriNoma in Quezon City, Glorietta in Makati, Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas, Gateway in Cubao, and two inside the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay.
