Rent-To-Own Stores See Biz Rising

On a recent afternoon, Leon Redman and his mother, Pearline, were sitting at a table at the Rent-A-Center store on Malabar Road in Palm Bay, filling out an application to rent two sets of bedroom furniture.

Leon Redman had a very simple reason for renting the furniture rather than visiting one of the dozens of furniture stores around the county. “Tough economic times,” he said. “This just feels more comfortable.”

The 50-year-old plumber is one of a growing number of people who are for the first time turning to a “lease-to-own” store for such things as furniture, appliances and computers.

“We are getting a lot of new traffic that had never been in a Rent-A-Center before,” said District Manager David Pollock.

Rent-A-Center same store sales were up 2.3 percent last year. At a time when retailers are reporting dropping sales, that qualifies as a success. Carry on reading…
