Closure Of Staten Island Wendy’s Leaves Former Employees Disgruntled, Without Pay

Staten Island Advance:

The sudden closing of a Wendy’s restaurant in Staten Island’s Arden Heights neighborhood has resulted in a long, hot summer for the former employees whose last paychecks are worthless.

Months before shutting its doors, there had been rumors that the independently-owned Wendy’s in the Village Greens Shopping Center, was in trouble and on the verge of closing.

“But we were told the rumors weren’t true,” said Krystal Velasquez, 16, of Arden Heights, who had worked at the Wendy’s restaurant for nine months before it ceased operations in mid-July.

News of the closing came as surprise. When she returned to the restaurant to pick up her last check, it was given to her by a manager of the restaurant. The owner was not there, she said.

Miss Velasquez took her paycheck to a local check-cashing outlet. Recently, that check-cashing outlet called her to inform her that the check had bounced and she must pay for the cost of the check and a $30 fee for insufficient funds.
