This period is the busiest time of the year in the United States for shipping packages and you will have to plan ahead to get that present to a loved one on time.

More than 830 million cards, letters and packages are expected to be mailed on Dec. 14 — the nation’s busiest mailing day of the year — compared to 583 million on a typical day, according to the U.S. Postal Service. And those numbers don’t include UPS and FedEx shipments.

“The volume of packages during (the holiday season) is big,” UPS spokeswoman Megan Belt said. “Everyone is waiting until the last minute to get their packages out.”

The week of Dec. 14 is generally the last week to get packages out via ground service, the cheapest option, whether using the Postal Service, UPS or FedEx.

Customers will have until Dec. 17 to ship via FedEx Ground, Dec. 16 for ground shipping with UPS and Dec. 21 for First-Class Mail with the Postal Service.
