Arby’s Veteran To Depart

Wall Street Journal:

Wendy’s/Arby’s Group Inc. said the head of its struggling Arby’s chain is leaving the company, with a spokesman noting results have been below expectations for the past year.

Tom Garrett, 48 years old, who served as president and chief executive, wasn’t available to comment, the spokesman said.
Wendy’s/Arby’s President and CEO Roland Smith will serve as interim president of Arby’s, while a search is held for a permanent successor. Mr. Garrett’s position at Arby’s will be replaced with a brand president who will report to Mr. Smith, the spokesman said.

The fast-food sector has been hurt by rising unemployment, as well as a price war to attract consumers. Wendy’s sales have been holding up better than Arby’s, which was reluctant to follow the industry trend and discount its sandwiches, though late last year it planned to expand the number of stores with a value menu.
