McDonald’s Corp.‘s reported global same-store sales rose 4.8% in February, above most analysts’ expectations, on strong overseas and modest U.S. gains.
Same-store sales in the U.S. rose 0.6% despite severe weather in portions of the country.
Shares of the Oak Brook, Ill., chain were up 2.3%, or $1.45 at $65.12 in 4 p.m. trading Monday on the New York Stock Exchange.
The U.S. fast-food industry continues to battle the effects of high unemployment. McDonald’s same-store sales rose 0.6% domestically last month, aided by a $1 breakfast menu to attract customers during the thinner morning commute, as well as an Olympics-themed Chicken McNugget promotion. The company’s U.S. same-store sales declined in three of the past five months.
