The Register-Guard:

Question: I want to start my own business. Is it better to go with a franchise or start a completely new business?

Answer: With thousands of franchises out there to choose from, starting a business as a franchisee is very attractive. A franchise offers built-in name recognition, established procedures for operating the business and on-going support. A franchisor may give you advice on the optimal location for your business, may help you train your employees and will train you in running the business in the way that has proved successful for other franchisees.

As part of a franchise, you may benefit from national or regional advertising campaigns. You may benefit from negotiated discounts with suppliers. You will benefit from having an expert to call when problems arise. Some franchisors have ties to banks or other financing sources. Other franchisors may have payment plans to help you with the initial fees. Franchise owners’ organizations let members share their experiences and learn from one another.
