Women-Owned Franchises Are Scarce

Lack of flexibility that cuts into family balance is major factor why relatively few women own quick service food franchises.

As a consumer insights analyst for Oklahoma City-based Sonic Corp., the nation’s largest chain of drive-in restaurants, Kim Mathe looked at the number of women-owned quick service restaurant franchises and was surprised there were so few of them.

Especially when the trend of women owners in all businesses has been steadily increasing in recent years according to a 2008 Center for Women’s Business Research report that indicates 10.1 million women owned businesses in the United States, most (53 percent) in the services industry. Read more.
