Blood, sweat and tears. That’s not just the name of a group. It’s what some gyms might want to extract from its members as they operate in a hyper-intensive environment.
Planet Fitness takes the opposite approach. It seeks to create a non-intimidating atmosphere.
“This is a place where members can relax, get in shape and have fun without being subjected to the hard-core, look-at-me attitude that exists in too many gyms,” says Jonathan Epstein, co-owner of the Planet Fitness club which held its grand opening celebration in Natick last week. That attitude is at the heart of the club’s Judgment Free Zone philosophy.
In keeping with that philosophy, the club comes equipped with a lunk alarm. Resembling an air-raid siren and accompanied by a spinning light, it sounds whenever a member notifies the staff that someone is acting like a lunk. That’s someone who “grunts loudly, drop weights with attitude or judges.” The club strongly discourages lunky behavior.
