Buck’s The Trend: Dollar Stores Are Thriving In Jackson

Despite the Jackson economy’s slump — and maybe because of it — one type of retailer has been thriving locally: dollar stores.

Ten years ago, there were four dollar stores in the Jackson area. Now there are 18 in Jackson County, with a 19th in the works in Spring Arbor.

Two chains — Dollar General and Family Dollar — dominate the dollar-store market in Jackson and plan to open more stores across the country within the next year.

They have thrived while plans for higher-profile retail developments — including the proposed Northpointe Town Center north of I-94 — have gone nowhere.
