In Mark Hawthorne’s ideal world, kids would drop by McDonald’s on their way to school and pick up their lunch. Fat-fighters would swing by their local fast food restaurant for a WeightWatcher’s meal.

And those who felt they could splash out on a Big Mac would do so – by easing swiftly through the drive-through in under 90 seconds.

Australian-born Hawthorne has obviously got big plans for the McDonald’s brand he took control of in 2006 having jumped the Ditch to take up the managing director role at the global corporation’s New Zealand business.

With 159 restaurants operated by 50 franchisees, the company has a huge fast food footprint here – a footprint that has many critics.
