Starting Fresh With A Franchise

Unemployment, bordering on 15 percent locally and 9 percent nationwide, doesn’t exactly spur confidence in job seekers. Overwhelmed businesses may start to look at submitted résumés and cover letters the way they’d look at junk mail. Scott Santy was one of those desperately mass-mailing in search of a job.

Santy, who was discarded by his employer, a financial investment company, he has found his calling. Instead of a tie, he dons a T-shirt saying, “Live, Work, Play with your toes exposed” and works as a franchisee selling flip-flops.

Brian Miller expects more businesses to jump into franchising. The International Franchise Association convention occupied the MGM Grand Convention Center on Feb. 13-16, drawing thousands of franchise servicers from around the country.
