A Franchise Is A Whole Different Deal

Question: I’m thinking about buying a franchise, but I’ve never owned my own business. Does that mean I wouldn’t make a good franchise owner?

Answer: Not necessarily. Although franchise owners are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of their individual franchises, they don’t have the same operational authority an independent small-business owner has. Instead, they are expected to run things as the franchisor wants them run. In fact, from the franchisor’s point of view, too much entrepreneurial spirit could almost be seen as a liability; the ideal candidates might be those with corporate or even military backgrounds who are used to following directions, not those who are intent on doing things their own way.

Of course, a franchisor will still be looking for an individual with some management experience. Even though the franchisor will provide training and assistance, marketing ideas and materials, and guidelines for operating the franchise, it’s still up to the franchisee to get the business started and keep it running smoothly on a day-to-day basis.
