Ordinary Household Items Can Pose Serious Threat To Seniors

June 20, 2012 by Mark | 0 Comments

Electrical cords, stacks of magazines, dirty floors, bunched area rugs and poor lighting can cause older adults to stumble and fall, leading to injuries ranging from minor cuts to far more serious hip fractures and head trauma. This is especially true for seniors whose balance, vision or cognitive abilities are impaired.

In fact, one in three adults age 65 and older suffers from falls each year, warns Steve Barlam, Chief Professional Officer of LivHOME. Often, these falls lead to emergency room visits, an increased fear of falling and reluctance to take part in healthy physical activities such as walking.

Barlam discusses these risks and how to reduce them in Episode 30 of The Senior Care Podcast by LivHOME, titled Home Safety.

Veteran-Run Franchises Build On Learned Skills

June 20, 2012 by Cris | 0 Comments

Peter Turner owns and operates seven Dunkin’ Donuts locations and expects to double that number by next year. Managing 150 employees and juggling the demands of so many stores may prove overwhelming to some, but Turner entered entrepreneurship armed with a specific kind of experience.

“I was a pilot for 20 years flying primarily the SA-60 Seahawk Destroyers,” Turner says.

So what does being a Navy pilot have to do with coffee and donuts? Both military service and business ownership require similar skills.

“Whether you’re a [non-commissioned officer] or a young officer, it’s really about people, some equipment and a mission,” Turner says. “And you’re trained for that better than you realize.”

Here Comes The Bridesmaid

June 20, 2012 by Cris | 0 Comments

Brisbane Times:

Australia’s bridal industry is largely focused on just that: the bride. But what about the women behind ‘the woman’? Enter this mother and daughter team.

While in full wedding planning mode three years ago, Talia Sasson struggled to find the right dresses for her bridesmaids.

“The ones I did find locally were either cheap-looking or cost over $1000 to have made,” says the 26-year-old Sydneysider, who decided instead to take her hunt online. There she found fashionable US bridesmaids stores aplenty, offering good quality at a reasonable cost.

“I thought, ‘Why don’t we have anything like this in Australia?’ And to start with, that’s all that was: a thought,” Sasson says.

Today, the arts degree graduate and former film production assistant, along with her mother, former teacher Bella Kaye, runs Bridesmaids Only. It’s a dedicated bridesmaids store where, like most bridal boutiques, customers are served on an appointment-only basis.

So how did she make the leap? Carry on reading.

Great Clips Uses Data To Address Franchisee Discontent

June 19, 2012 by Mark | 0 Comments

Wall Street Journal (blog):

In an effort to spur investment by small businesses and shore up the economy, President Barack Obama signed the JOBS Act into law in April. The law, which makes it easier for entrepreneurs to raise capital through public markets, is a potential boon for a number of business models, including people looking to buy into an existing franchise.

While franchises have obvious benefits – a proven business idea, and marketing and strategic support from the mother ship chief among them – there’s also a downside, which is that franchise owners often allow a competitor to open new a store in or near an existing franchisee’s territory, almost inevitably leading to tension between franchisee and franchisor.

The two sides of the franchise equation need each other. Full post.
