Ohio Franchisee Who Runs Pa. Panera Stores Agrees To Settle Black Worker’s Discrimination Suit

An Ohio franchisee who runs several western Pennsylvania Panera Bread stores has agreed to pay more than $76,000 to settle discrimination claims by current and former black employees.

Chief U.S. District Judge Gary Lancaster on Monday told attorneys for Guy Vines, the black worker, and the company he sued in January, Warren, Ohio-based Covelli Enterprises, to advertise the settlement in newspapers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Kentucky and West Virginia, where Covelli operates Panera stores.

Local development groups are hosting a presentation on franchising.

“Franchising 101” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at Seven Seas Hotel in Mandan.

A panel of local entrepreneurs will discuss their experiences with franchises. There also will be a question and answer period.

The panel will include: Annette Behm-Caldwell of Open Road Honda, Shannon Gangl of Seven Seas Hotel and Montana Mike’s restaurant, Dale Preszler of Outdoor Services Inc. and Indoor Services Inc. and Dennis Sotebeer of McDonald’s.

The Top 400 restaurant franchise companies generated an estimated $34 billion in sales in 2011 and accounted for almost 10 percent of the total commercial restaurant industry’s sales of $370 billion. Total units from the Top 400 came to 27,206, comprising nearly 5 percent of the commercial restaurant industry’s units.

NPC International continued to dominate franchise sales at $938 million in 2011. As the largest Pizza Hut franchisee, it operated 1,151 restaurants at the end of last year, an increase of 1.3 percent from 2010. Read on…

Macado’s Cuts Ribbon On New Franchise

The sandwich shop across the street from Emory & Henry College is now open.

Macado’s, a regional restaurant known for it’s wide variety of sandwiches and subs, and located in other college towns like Bristol, Radford and Blacksburg, cut the ribbon on a new location this morning.

“The students and employees here have been absolutely fantastic,” said Richard Macher, president of Macado’s, during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Subway Restaurants Committed To Proper Treatment Of Animals

Subway restaurant chain is being lauded by two of the largest animal welfare organizations for its leadership in demanding humane conditions for farm animals. Subway, which is based here, has 37,434 stores in 100 countries.

It recently announced the elimination of gestation crates for its pork sows. Subway also set a goal of using only free-range eggs, and in the United Kingdom the company has eliminated crate-style housing for sows.

Subway officials said the company is committed to being aware of the environment and to treating animals humanely.

Subway added an animal welfare section to its website.

Applebee’s Moving Into Former Ruby Tuesday Building In West Fargo

The Applebee’s restaurant at 4900 13th Ave. S. in Fargo is moving down the street into the former Ruby Tuesday restaurant at 1640 13th Ave. S. in West Fargo.

The new Applebee’s will open at 11 a.m. Sept. 22.

The Ruby Tuesday closed in late July.

The new location features better visibility and traffic access from 13th Avenue, more parking for guests and a revitalized look and feel, according to a news release from Food Management Investors Inc., owners of the restaurant.

The former Applebee’s location at Time Square East across from Wal-Mart opened in 2002.

Panera Bread Coming To Streetsboro

Panera Bread is coming to Streetsboro, according to a Sept. 12 news release from Kowitt & Passov Real Estate Group posted on its Facebook page.

Covelli Enterprises, DBA Panera Bread, has bought 1.66 acres at Streetsboro Crossing, where it plans to build a freestanding building with a drive-through window for the new restaurant.

Seven-Eleven Inc. opens a location later this month on South Salisbury Boulevard as part of an aggressive growth plan to saturate Maryland’s Eastern Shore and southern Delaware with convenience stores.

A 7-Eleven store under construction south of Bateman Street is set to open Sept. 26, bringing the far southern end of bustling South Salisbury Boulevard its first convenience store. The store is across the street from Salisbury University and the newly-built Sea Gull Square student residential complex and retail center, meeting a corporate mission to locate in close proximity to college campuses.

“We are opening a lot of stores around college campuses,” said Margaret Chabris, director of corporate communications at the Dallas-based 7-Eleven. “One of the areas we look at is where stores operate successfully. We are opening a lot of stores —period — around the world and in the United States.”

Sloan’s Ice Cream is introducing its creative and fanciful ice cream and candy shop concept to Destin as a franchising proposal.

Owner of Sloan’s Ice Cream, Sloan Kamenstein, opened his first store in West Palm Beach in 1999.

There are currently four Sloan’s locations, all of which are situated on the eastern border of Florida with two stores in West Palm Beach, one in Palm Beach Gardens and one in Boca Raton.

“We make all of our own ice cream — we still make it at our original store,” said Kamenstein. “We have a lot of very unusual, creative flavors.”

Speedy Service Wins Courier Top Prize

Speedy and accurate service has earned a Tauranga courier the top national prize for Fastway Couriers.

Tauranga Fastway Couriers franchisee Todd Hinton was presented with the award for Courier Franchisee of the Year at an awards dinner in Auckland at the Fastway Couriers’ Annual Excellence Awards.

Todd was selected from a field of more than 200 courier franchisees from around the country for his outstanding business acumen, customer service, brand advocacy and overall contribution to the community.

“Two years ago, I was chosen as runner up Courier Franchisee of the year,” says Todd.

“I decided there and then that I was going to continue to strive to be the number one courier in New Zealand. It’s great to look back and see that all that hard work has paid off.”
