Water carafes come in all shapes and sizes. And they promise to make your water cleaner and taste better. Consumer Reports just tested four from Brita, Perfect Pitcher by Shaklee, Pur, and Lotus to see which ones live up to their claims.
All the carafes were tested with water that was contaminated with lead and chloroform. Testers poured the water through the filter then checked the water to see how much contamination was left. All the carafes did a pretty good job removing one or more contaminants.
Another test was for taste. Cabbage was boiled in water because it gives water a strong taste and odor. That water was then poured through the carafe and taste testers sampled the water to determine which removed the taste and odor. All the carafes did a good job here, too.

It would be prudent to use this carafe as part of a System. Missing is a UV device to kill bacteria , microbes and such. Additionally, removal of cysts, protozoa, eColi – impervious to chlorine, requires a mesh filter that stops everything down to 2 Micron.
There is one system on the market that I am familiar with that has all three aspects covered. It is used right at the tap.
