Tough Times Call For Supplementing Income

One of the best pieces of advice Amy Peek said she ever received was that no matter how well a career is going, always keep some form of supplemental income.

That’s why Peek, 29, of Sheraden started work in March as a Pampered Chef representative, and she spends 10 to 15 hours a week demonstrating cookware and recipes at parties and otherwise drumming up business.

Her primary job is running her own bookkeeping, accounting and tax business that serves small companies. But her sales work on the side “covers about half my rent” of $800 a month, she said.

Peek is among the armies of new direct sales representatives — Avon ladies, Mary Kay reps and sellers of Tupperware and other brands — who are advancing on living rooms across the country. Their ranks are full of professionals taking second jobs amid the recession.

Amy Robinson of the Direct Selling trade group said while many people like the flexible hours and social aspects, “During tough economic times, it gives them something to help them pad their wallets a little,” she said. And for those who are laid off, it can provide vital income.
