The NMFI was conceived in 1999 with the sole objective of increasing the number of minorities in franchising. Selection for the Top 50 was based on many factors including historical performance, brand identification, market dynamics, and franchisee satisfaction. Additional rating criteria include the level of initial training, on-going support, financial stability, the number of minority-owned franchises and the number of minorities in senior management.
