More Workers Staying At Home

Tulsa World:

Yvonne Jacobson’s makeshift office is her kitchen table. She had company last week at her Broken Arrow home, so the back bedroom she typically uses to make the baby-shower gifts for her home business was occupied.

And writer-video producer Jeff Kauffman’s office is just down the hall from his kids. Or, occasionally, it’s an airport, as when he flies from Tulsa to his company’s headquarters in Colorado.

For both Tulsa-area residents, working from home is not just a luxury. It’s an atmosphere they prefer.

In 2007, 20 percent of employed Americans did some or all of their work at home, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in a survey about Americans’ time use.

Thanks to technology and convenience, working from home is becoming less of a trend and more a way of life, said Lesley Pyle, who operates the Web networking site, Home Based Working Moms, from her home in Houston. She created the site in 1995, after she had a baby and wanted to continue her marketing and public relations career.
