Stop Cleaning your Office

The most popular resolution almost every year is either to loose weight, or to be more organized, since organization goes along with business… we’ll discuss that one. In a recent article I read that it was advised to STOP cleaning your office. Really? There is a difference between clean and organized.

An office can be spotless to the point where you can eat off of the floor, but the person using it has no idea where their invoices are kept. It’s clean, but not organized. Where as an office can look like a 4 year old was playing in it all day, but the person can find where everything is that they need. It’s not clean, but its organized.

True organization is about designing systems that support you in the work that you do. When I work with clients we use a simple three step process: Think, Plan, Organize. That means that first we think about what’s not working in the space, then we brainstorm a number of solutions to each problem and choose the one that makes the most sense to the client.

Take a few moments to think about how you work during the day, what thing’s you use the most often and where you keep them, is it working? Organize to your personal touch, if having a stack of bill’s over in the corner is what makes it easiest for you to find them, then go with it.
