Sylvan Centers Owner Owes Thousands More

Columbia Daily Tribune:

Jack Stanley said he has paid back more than $60,000 in refunds to former Sylvan Learning Center customers since May 29, according to a news release from the Sylvan franchisee.

But that’s less than a sixth of what he owes Sylvan Learning Inc., the educational tutoring company for which he served as a franchisee, the company said.

“It’s unfortunate,” Stanley said, “but it isn’t uncommon to be in that situation when you have a business that isn’t profitable.”
Stanley, who owned the Columbia and Jefferson City Sylvan Learning Centers before they closed last week, admitted he still owes money to Sylvan Learning. Sylvan Learning said Stanley owes them more than $400,000, according to a previous news release from Sylvan.

Stanley operated 10 centers in Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois. All have closed or have plans to be sold in the next week.
