Komala’s, A Singaporean Fast-Food South Indian Chain, Is Agreeable But Lacks Bite

It is brave to franchise a chain of South Indian restaurants in a city full of locally revered Udipi restaurants that serve the same food for cheaper.

It is braver still to have projections of serving around 1,500 customers a day, given that we experienced an excruciatingly slow and confusing process of placing our order. On our second visit—required since the restaurant didn’t serve rice-based dishes last week when it was ‘soft open’—the clearly inexperienced server at the self-service counter was hapless, at best. We were pressed to upgrade individual dishes to meals and by the end, were just grateful to be done with it. This is a shame, since post-ordering, the service is cheerful, helpful and quite efficient.
