Franchising Gains Steam As Business Model

Dona Blackman, a former human resources director who spent three decades at a Fortune 500 company, today calls herself a “solo-preneur.”

Blackman, 56, began working at John Hancock Financial Services Inc. in 1973 at the age of 19, but was laid off in 2003. After picking herself up and getting back into the work force, she was again laid off from a similar position at another company, Value Options Inc., in 2009.

“I got laid off twice in just six years,” she said. “I told myself that I just couldn’t subject myself to it anymore.”
