GPS Enabled Asthma Inhaler

Asthma is caused by an inflammation of the airways. When an attack occurs, the muscles surrounding the airways get tight as the lining of the air passages swell. This reduces the amount of air that can flow through them.

In most people, asthma is triggered by a variety of environmental factors, including:

  • Animals (pet hair or dander)
  • Dust
  • Changes in weather (most often cold weather)
  • Chemicals in the air or in food
  • Mold
  • Pollen
  • Tobacco smoke

Unfortunately, asthma attacks can also be triggered by non environmental factors like illness, stress or exercise.

Wouldn’t it be great to know if you’re attack was caused by something external? Until now, there hasn’t really been a way to determine this unless you were actually standing next to someone else using their inhaler.

A new product from Asthmapolis called the Spiroscout hopes to combat that lack of information. They’ve created a GPS enabled asthma inhaler that records the time and location of uses and then uploads that information to a centralizer server to compare your usage against other users.

The device is small and lightweight and attaches to the end of an standard inhaler. It lasts two days between USB charges.
