Franchising, Togetherness And Individualism

Togetherness is a beautiful thing. It is indeed an essential element of a meaningful relationship. But, in the wise words of Khalil Gibran, often cited in the context of the marriage relationship:

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, and let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.”

The concept of moving seas between the shores of the parties’ souls is of course a troubling one for the franchising relationship. Strict system compliance is a non-negotiable aspect of a business format relationship which is driven by mutual self-interest and reinforced not by the bond of love but by the much less romantic bond of contract.
