‎Niche In Education: Helping Struggling Students

Greenville News:

Susanne LaFaye went into special education because she wanted to help kids in a different way than she could in a regular classroom setting.

At Travelers Rest High School, LaFaye has found her niche. LaFaye, named this year’s Teacher of the Year at Travelers Rest High, is a resource teacher who works with ninth- through 12-graders who have learning disabilities.

It was during her student-teaching days that LaFaye first decided that special education was the right fit for her.

“I student-taught kindergarten, but I visited the special-ed classroom,
and I was just drawn to it,” says LaFaye, chatting in her classroom during her planning period. “It made me decide to get my master’s in learning disabilities special-ed. And once I started taking the classes, I really enjoyed them and felt like I could help the students.”

Resource classes are for designed for students who need a little extra help in school. They may have learning disabilities or need some type of remediation while they work toward their high school diplomas, LaFaye says.
