The Des Moines Register:
One minute Christina Moffat, 33, was working with RDG Planning & Design, working on a multi-million dollar health care project, and the next she was eyeball-deep in cupcake batter. OK, there were about four months in between. But still.
Now, almost two years later, after establishing an enthusiastic following for her gourmet goodies, Moffat’s Crème Cupcake is on the eve of opening a bakery and “dessert lounge†on 28th Street just north of Ingersoll (in the old Great Harvest Bread location). The traditional daytime bakery will in the evenings become a full-service bar and chic spot to enjoy a post-theater/after-dinner/just-for-fun treat.
She has always paid attention to what was going on around her, Moffat says, which gives her a leg up in spotting new trends. “I’m the sort of person who loves to study people and things and when we traveled, everywhere we went, we saw cupcake shops. On the coasts, dessert lounges are big. And (people here) are more willing than ever to try new things.â€
(For the record, Moffat says the next big trend is single-serving pies — which, of course, she already offers.)
