So, if you’re not currently experienced with hiring, what do you need to know before you get started? That’s what we’re going to be exploring below.

Cast a Wide Net

In terms of getting your franchise off the ground, you may be inclined to rush. Don’t. Hiring the right people to be a part of your opening staff is incredibly important. Therefore, you’re going to want to avail yourself of every opportunity to attract candidates. Don’t simply confine yourself to posting an ad on a big job board like Monster. Advertise in local newspapers, pop an ad on craigslist and look into recruitment agencies. The more candidates you have to choose from the better.

Ask the Right Questions

With the job market the way that it is these days, expect to get a lot of resumes. That’s both a good thing and a bad thing. Having a lot of resumes to sort through means that you’re going to have your pick of the litter, so to speak. But, it also means you’re going to have to devote a lot of time to sifting through candidates.

Once you’ve identified the candidates in whom you have the most interest, it’s time to get interviewing. During this process, you have to remember what your goals are, and you need to have a clear idea of the environment you’re trying to create. This will be informed both by the kind of business your franchise is, as well as the kind of manager that you are. Therefore, conduct your interviews in a way that teases out whether or not a particular candidate is going to be a match for the culture that your business demands.

Cultivating Good Employees

Once you’ve had your pick of the job market litter, you’ll have a staff of completely green employees. While they all may have looked great on paper and sounded good in their interviews, making them the employees that you need them to be falls squarely upon your shoulders.

Therefore, don’t simply hire and expect results. Instead, put your attention into offering the best training program possible. In most cases, the franchisor will provide you with a framework to work from, but don’t simply rely upon that. This is your business, after all. Make sure that you’re providing training in a manner that injects your personality, goals and expectations into the staff as well!
