A Business Owner on Three Continents Dishes Advice to Franchisees

Schooley Mitchell is a large network of professional independent consultants helping clients profit by staying on top of the telecom and merchant services marketplace on their behalf – and making sure their clients don’t pay more than they should for those services. To date, Schooley Mitchell has generated more than $240,000,000 in profits for clients by helping them reduce expenses.

In our Q&A with Jerry Pollio, owner of a Schooley Mitchell franchise in Houston, Tex., we learn how he overcame the initial challenges, what he would’ve done differently and what advice he has for other potential franchisees.

Why did you choose the Schooley Mitchell franchise?

The B2B model, little competition and it’s home-based.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Primarily meeting with both new and existing clients, planning and organizing weekly schedule, emails and phone calls.

What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your franchise?

All new businesses will require time to build your expertise in the field, learn the system and grow your market share. Never forget that you will need to plan for additional expenses.

Where did you research or get advice about starting a franchise?

Coming from a franchise background I understand the dynamics of what makes a franchise system successful.

What is your secret to success?

Nothing special, just show up every day to work, continue to learn as much as possible and never forget business is about relationships.

What would you do differently if you had to do it all over?

For me everything has been about learning. I would say understanding that I cannot do everything by myself and to reach out when needed.

Where do you see your business in five years?

I will continue with my Franchise Consulting Practice and also grow my Schooley Mitchell Franchise.

What advice do you have for others looking to own a franchise?

Understand that it’s your own business and to follow the established system. Many enter a franchise and believe they can do it better or differently, that generally becomes a very costly error.

Would you recommend others be franchisees? Why?

For anyone who has never owned a business, it’s one of the best business formats because there are many resources in place. Software, marketing, buying leverage, part of an established network of owners. Remember you’re not competing with the other owners so leverage those relationships.

Any parting words?

We live in an age of information. Basically, with some research you can find most anything. As you begin your journey into business ownership, keep in mind nothing is, nor ever will be, perfect, so be flexible. Interview everyone and ask questions. That is the only way to make an informed decision. I have owned businesses on three continents, and the same principles apply. Relationships, relationships, relationships… build them, cultivate them and they will pay rewards.
