We recently spoke with Diana Hurtado, an In Home Pet Services franchise owner in Forest Hills, NY, to find out about some of the challenges she faced when starting her franchise, her secret to success and, lastly, what advice she has for others looking to open a franchise.
How long have you owned an In Home Pet Services (IHPS) franchise?
I have owned IHPS of Forest Hills since February 2011, for five years.

What were you doing before becoming a franchise owner?
I was working in a catering company.
Why did you choose your franchise?
I have always had a passion for animals and it was my dream to work with pets. Also, because I was already working for the company as a dog walker.
What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your franchise?
My biggest challenge was to get myself used to talking to people when interviewing new clients and to keep them happy.
How much did you spend before your doors were officially opened?
About $1,000.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I mostly work from home, keeping the books and running the business.
What is your secret to success?
Perseverance, hard work and love for my job. Also, treating my staff and clients like family.
Where do you see your business in five years?
I hope to have opened a daycare/hotel for pets.
What are your three favorite online tools or resources and what do you love about them?
Google is the best tool for this type of business.

Yes. The founder of the Company, Robyn Elman, was and still is my role model
What advice do you have for others looking to own a franchise?
Make sure you invest your time and money in a reputable and well-known company like IHPS.
Would you recommend others be franchisees? If so, why?
Absolutely! They will give you all the tools you need to start your own business and you won’t be alone. You will always have advice and help every step of the way.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I am a single mom, so being an owner of a franchise has given me the opportunity to have more time for my children and to provide for them, which is the greatest gift.
