Top Tips to Help Your Clients Choose the Perfect Wedding Dress

As a wedding planner you know that choosing the perfect wedding dress is at the top of every bride’s to-do list.

A wedding is an incredibly exciting time for your clients. But it’s also a time of great stress, considering there are so many choices to make. Your clients want to make sure the food they serve fits everyone’s dietary needs. They want the personalized wedding glassware to be elegant and tasteful.

But the bride’s search for the perfect wedding dress is perhaps the most stressful search of all. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help each of your clients find a gorgeous gown that’s right for her.

1. Determine Your Personal Style

Your clients probably already know their own style when it comes to getting ready for work or going out for cocktails with friends. However, when it comes to choosing a wedding dress, they can be basically clueless.

For some reason, leafing through all those bridal magazines only adds to a bride’s confusion. And don’t even mention the stress of trying on dress after dress at a bridal salon.

Luckily, there are some great resources out there that will help. For instance, guide clients toward this quiz from Essence and this guide from Dots Dash. These can help your clients translate their everyday style into wedding dress inspiration.

2. Use Your Shape

Another way to quickly cut down the number of options your clients face is to encourage them to pick a specific style. For example, a bride-to-be should choose a wedding dress that complements her body shape. If your client has a large bust, for example, going strapless might not be the best idea. While it might look beautiful, she’ll be fretting about it later when she’s trying to dance.

According to Brides, a woman should start by figuring out which body type best describes her: petite, plus size, busy, hourglass, or lean and straight. Then, she can research which dresses work best for her type.

Use this guide from Modern Wedding, for example, which explains the best dress for your client’s figure and features. Since custom alterations can cost up to $300 per adjustment, she won’t want to pick a dress that doesn’t fit well and have to change it to work with her body type.

3. Have Fun with Different Styles

Maybe your client is one of those people who’s completely open-minded and wants to try everything on. In that case, it’s a good thing we live in the age of the Internet. Instead of having only one bridal shop appointment or trying on her mother’s or grandmother’s gown, today’s brides-to-be can easily explore wedding fashion online.

One place they will definitely want to look is Pinterest. Jacquelyn Ward, one of the founders of Our Story Bridal, a consignment boutique for designer dresses, explains it like this: “Do a bit of research before you start the big hunt so that you can get a sense of what is available and what your eye is drawn to in terms of shape, details, and fabric textures…. Browsing online (even for an hour) can help you start focusing so that you’re not totally overwhelmed when you first step into a store with countless choices.”

Another great resource is Azazie. This is an online custom bridal boutique which allows each bride to customize her dress. What’s more, they also offers dress fittings from the comfort of your clients’ homes. Azazie’s “try at home option” allows your clients to select up to 3 bridesmaid dresses for $10 each and 2 wedding gowns for $20 each to try on at home.

Your client will have a whole week to try them on. What better excuse could she have for throwing a dress-fitting party at home?

Watch Her Walk Down the Aisle in Style

There are a lot of great strategies you can give your clients to help them confidently select that perfect wedding dress. Some brides prefer to do their research online. Others will want to visit a few retail locations before making their final decision.

Either way, one thing is certain: When her wedding day arrives, your client will be wearing a dress she loves and looks amazing in. There’s nothing more beautiful than that.
