In other applications, industrial pins serve as a linking point or facilitate the positioning of parts during the assembly phase.  

There are also two basic types of industrial pins: semi-permanent and quick-release or self-locking. The semi-permanent type requires specialized tools for assembly and disassembly with supplementary force. As for the quick-release type, they have a spring-loaded mechanism capable of latching the pin in position. They are simple to install or remove. The Types of Industrial Pins

There are different types of industrial pins on the market with specific functions. They vary depending on their intended use.  

1. Clevis Pins

Clevis pins are smooth, cylindrical fasteners in a pin shape that works together with a U-shaped fastener known as a clevis with a miniature hole at one end. Similar to other fasteners, they mainly function to fasten components or parts. Clevis pins are readily available in different materials, sizes, finishes, and designs depending on their application.

4. Taper Pins

Among the various industrial pins, taper pins feature a large diameter at one end, which plays a role when securing collars or hubs to shafts, especially in applications involving a minimal load. Depending on the application, some might have a male screw thread on the smaller point that serves as a locking element.  

5. Cotter Pins

Cotter pins have different names, such as R-clip or split pins. These are essentially wired fasteners that function as a locking mechanism to secure pins, nuts, or other fasteners, especially in scenarios where bolts and nuts go through significant stress and the potential risk of damage. Today, cotter pins are available in different types, such as circle cotter pins, ring cotter pins, and hairpin cotter pins, to name a few.  

6. Dowel Pins

A dowel pin is an industrial pin with a distinctive cylindrical shape and solid construction. It’s small in size and mainly utilized to maintain the alignment of parts before being combined with screws or other fasteners. Most dowel pins typically feature an angled end that facilitates convenient insertion. The pins are available in various materials, such as steel, plastic, or wood, depending on their use.
