Whitmore Lake resident Nellie Sowash has found a way to enlist infants in the battle for a greener Earth – by having them wear natural cloth, rather than disposable, diapers.
The concept my seem somewhat archaic in an age when Huggies, Pampers and the like have ruled the baby-bottom market.
But Sowash, through the recent birth of her daughter, learned cloth diapers – each one of which can be washed and reused multiple times – are more eco-friendly than disposables, which don’t decompose well and add to trash piles.
Cloth diapers, when properly cared for, can be handed down to other babies, Sowash said.
“We’ve really found it to be a great option. We’re really happy with them,” she said.
She was so impressed with the results, she started her own company, Nell’s Natural Baby, which sells one-piece cloth diapers with snaps and related accessories.
The cloth diapers have built-in waterproofing to prevent leakage, and are easier to wash than parents might think, Sowash said.
When worn by infants, the diapers are machine-washable without prior cleaning.
When worn by older babies, waste must be deposited in a toilet prior to washing, Sowash explained.
