Local Women Bank On At-Home Businesses

Beacon News:

There are more than 2 million of them worldwide, and their population continues to grow. Some are housewives, others are equipped with a Harvard Ph.D. Each and every one of them wants to sell you something.

As the economy sinks, many women are finding at-home businesses can be the boost to the income they need. Mary Kay representatives are coming out of the woodwork, looking to take their financial future into their own hands — one tube of lipstick at a time — turning their home-based business into bustling careers.

“Women are looking for a ‘plan B’ right now,” said Oswego mother Shari Chapman. “What may have felt like a secure job doesn’t have the same feel.”

Mary Kay recently announced that more than 2 million independent sales reps from more than 35 countries are currently reaping the benefits of being their own bosses. The company boasts it has seen a “surge of women interested in starting their own business.”

The number of independent sales reps increased nearly 25 percent since the first quarter of last year.

“Women from all backgrounds across the United States have discovered they can take their financial situations into their own hands right now, instead of worrying when they, or others in their lives, will be affected by our challenging economy,” said Yvette Franco, vice president of U.S. marketing for Mary Kay Inc.
