Flexability In Work And Motherhood

Joan Bell is on a roll. She had great success at the Winning Edge Awards, and now she is being recognized as one of the top 50 “MOMpreneurs” in Canada by MOMpreneur magazine, reports The Airdrie Echo.

Six years ago, Bell decided to start up her own yoga and fitness club.

“(Before) Genesis Place came about, I was taking (yoga) classes at Bert Church Theatre, in classrooms, and we were just all over the place,” she said. “I decided that I wanted to have a nice environment just for doing yoga and fitness classes.”

She said it took a couple of years to get established, and the business has grown substantially in the last three years.

“What I’ve always tried to do is add classes that are a little bit different,” she said. “Anything that was new and a little bit different, I tried to bring it in and just offer something different for people.”

Bell doesn’t teach any classes herself, and said she thinks of running the studio more as a part-time job. And with about 10 hours of work a week being spent on the computer, she is able to work a lot from home.

“That’s one of the nice things, being able to spend time with your family,” she said. “I just really feel that it’s afforded me the opportunity to be there when my kids need me, and to avoid some of that really high stress of ‘super-mom,’ trying to do everything at once.”

“It’s not for everyone,” she added. “But it certainly has worked well for me.”
