People who believe that cleaning the lint filter after each load is complete maintenance are sadly mistaken, said Rauch. The lint screen only traps about 60% of lint from laundry. The rest escapes into the back of the dryer, around the motor, and into the dryer duct. As lint accumulates, air flow is restricted. The dryer works harder, overheats, and eventually either quits working or causes a fire.
