Chicken lovers will have to find their fast-food fix elsewhere now that KFC, formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, has closed at 1618 Mission St.
KFC spokesman Rick Maynard said the franchisee in Santa Cruz made a business decision to close the restaurant as of March 1. There are no plans to reopen, Maynard said, suggesting patrons visit the location in Scotts Valley.
“It’s a mystery to us,” said Renee Floyd, manager of Larry’s Photography, next door.
Customer Steve Luzovich found the property owner locking the doors on March 4, saying no rent had been paid since October.
The shutdown left about 20 workers out of a job.
The property is owned by the Iuliano family.
