Product Teaches Kids Entrepreneur Skills

Phoenix Business Journal:

A Phoenix woman is hoping to teach youngsters entrepreneurial skills with a venture called Biz in a Boxx.

Melissa Rose developed the product during the past year and launched it in May after becoming concerned about the academic performance of her young daughter. She came up with the idea to help teach her daughter life skills such as responsibility and accountability.

“At the time, she wasn’t being responsible. She wasn’t doing her homework. The hope was that this (new business concept) would translate back into her school life,” Rose said.

Biz in a Boxx is a series of three programs aimed at youngsters ages 7 through 18. Called CEO Prodigy, CEO Apprentice and CEO, the systems teach business concepts with varying levels of sophistication. The products retail for between $40 and $60, and each contains a workbook, a padfolio, business cards and a receipt book.

Her goal to engage her daughter has paid off. Now 13, Sydney has formed a babysitting business called Plants, Paws and Pacifiers and hired four other girls. The budding entrepreneur also made the honor roll at school, and Rose has noticed a big change in her habits.

“She is spending her money differently. If she earns it, she isn’t spending it the way she does when I give it to her,” Rose said.
