Flab is fab for Jan Spaticchia. The self-confessed overweight 40 year-old founded and heads the growing chain of franchised health and fitness clubs aimed at those who would never normally set foot in the likes of Fitness First or LA Fitness, he says.

Last year, Energie opened 36 clubs (taking the total to 84) and the secret to Energie’s rapid expansion – taking it to number three in the league of gym businesses, claims Spaticchia – is that it targets a different customer segment.

“Only 7pc of the population go to gyms, 11pc if you include council leisure centres” he says. “But there is a massive fitness market out there – 23pc of us buy fitness DVDs, join diet clubs, buy home fitness equipment and join those local exercise clubs held in school halls.
