It was a perfect marriage, at least from a business perspective.
The parties first got together four years ago. At the time, John Carter was a restaurateur from Newark, Del., who owned a handful of successful small hamburger stands throughout Delaware called Jake’s Hamburgers. Carter’s tiny hamburger empire, which was founded in 1991, proved he had concocted a successful and reproducible business model, but he had neither the time nor the inclination to bring that model to a national stage by launching a franchising effort.
