Recession Fears Drive Direct Selling Boom

Business Spectator:

Workers worried about their job security are turning to direct selling as a way of bringing in an alternative income and reducing their dependence on their current employment, according to an Australian marketing company.

In November job advertisements on the internet and in newspapers fell for the seventh consecutive month to a near two-year low, according to ANZ’s job ads survey.

This has seen a boom in Australia’s direct selling, MLM, and network marketing industry, 4Life’s Australian and New Zealand manager Ben Riley said, noting that it had recruited 20 per cent more people than compared to the same time last year.

“More employees are looking at home based opportunities and micro-enterprises as these allow them to build them up around their current job commitments, do not require as substantial a start-up cost and can gradually subsidise job income,” Mr Riley said.

Mr Riley said direct selling was attractive because operational costs and overheads were basically cut out compared to retail sales.

Direct selling also provides flexible working times and hours that allows people to fit it in around their every day job, he said.

“Motivated individuals can easily build their business in proportion to their input and effort to supplement and in many cases completely replace their income,” Mr Riley said.
