The founders of Iceing On Top, Chelsey and Shella, answered a few of our questions on recycled gold, the charities they support, and much more.
What was the inspiration for Iceing On Top?
Iceing On Top was inspired by our own children, the lack of an upscale jewelry line for children, and our desire to help make the earth a better place for our children by using “Green” recycled and ethically mined materials.
What separates your company from the competition?
Iceing On Top is the only true fine children’s jewelry line dedicated to children on the market today. The line is designed to replicate simple diamond shapes in rose, yellow and white gold. The pieces can be worn alone or mixed together, making it fun to wear.
Your eco-friendly approach of using recycled rather than new gold is quite the step towards a better earth. Would you say it is cheaper, or more expensive, to use recycled gold?
Recycled gold is slightly more expensive when manufacturing , however it is a huge step in a positive direction when it comes to caring for our earth and making the world a better place for all children. We think its worth it! There is also no difference in the quality or in the look of the gold compared to freshly mined gold.
What organization(s) do you support?
Iceing On Top supports Keep A Child Alive in an effort to bring children suffering from AIDS the drugs they desperately need. We are also sponsors of Cookies for Kids Cancer which focuses on raising funds for pediatric cancer research.
How did the two of you meet?
We met at Tulane University, freshman year the first month of school. We have been the best of friends ever since!
What is the best part of having a partnership, rather than running a business individually?
We complete a perfect package! We both have different strengths and we use our strongest assets to complete a big picture. Our partnership allows us to bounce ideas off each other, learn from each other and grow to new heights together and of course…laugh and have fun together.
Did either of you ever think entrepreneurship was in your blood or is this simply something that found you?
We are both entrepreneurs at heart, we are bright, hardworking, motivated women. After finding the right niche, we were able to run with it.
As your company works through its first year in business, what goals do you hope to achieve?
We have many goals and we are extremely ambitious….so we would like to see Iceing on Top representated throughout the country and additionally in global markets. We hope to share the idea of using recycled gold in jewelry making and start a trend in the industry to manufacture more responsibly. We are so excited to share our designs and vision with our customers and hope to have children everywhere wearing iceing on top. We are already working on new designs and should have many more jewelry pieces in the upcoming year.
What advice do you have for those interested in taking their own ideas and turning them into a business?
Our advice would be to work hard, stay dedicated (no matter what people say), be optimistic and most of all, patient( in a nutshell!). Anything is possible.
