As I ride home from my Passion Party, I start to think about all the stereotypes that are out there about “sex toy party consultants”. Who do you really expect to walk through your door when you schedule a Passion or Sex Toy Party? Do you think your consultant will be leather clad with high heels and fishnets?
I had a very busy day today, and was running a bit behind schedule. I had a passion party scheduled for 7 pm. I looked up at the clock to find it was almost 6:45. As not to be late, I decided that I looked professional enough to go to my show as I was. Mind you I wasn’t wearing my normal “outfit”, just a basic khaki skirt, casual top and some sandals, comfortable enough for the beach themed party I was presenting. I normally would get a bit more dressed up. Satisfied with how I look, I freshened up my makeup, put on some Pure Instinct cologne, and headed out the door.
As I pull up to the address of the party, I see that there are no cars. Surprised by this, I call the hostess to ask if I had the right address. I did. She greets me outside and helps me up the stairs with my demo kit and table. Expecting to walk into an empty room, I was pleasantly surprised to see a house, filled with guests, 20 – 25 girls and guys.
As I set up my display, I hear all the conversations around me. Guests all engaged in separate conversations throughout the house, some in the kitchen, dining room and living room where I was to do the Passion Party.
One conversation peeked my interest. “See, she just like any one of us”, “Doesn’t she look like she should be the Pampered Chef lady”. I couldn’t help but comment back. I reply, “Sorry running late today, just wearing my regular clothes. No leather tonight.†She laughed.
What did she really expect?
Just last week, I was delivering orders to a hostess, all the orders bagged up discretely in a big box. I arrive at her house, carrying all her goodies from last week’s passion party. As I approach her door, I see she has someone working in her yard. Not knowing who the man is, I don’t reveal who I am. I just ask if “Cheryl” is home. Yeah she’s inside, who are you- the Avon lady? I laugh and say; no I am much more fun than the Avon lady. Cheryl comes to the door, and introduces me to her husband. I tell her that I didn’t tell him who I was, for all I knew he could have been the lawn guy. She laughs and says “Hun, these are the deliveries you want to get, trust me, you should love when Karen comes here” and she winks at him. It’s then he says “Oh, you are the one who does those parties, the passion lady!” and he breaks out with a big smile.
It made me think of just how main stream the sex toy party business has become today, and how typical it is for women to get door to door deliveries of their adult toys and novelties. How great is that?
You see, most Passion Parties consultants are just like you – average, typical women, (and men too). We have passion consultants of all ages, from 18-83. We come from all walks of life; lawyers, teachers, nurses, stay at home moms. We are mothers, daughters, neighbors, best friends, and even preacher’s daughters. We work full time or part time or any time we like.
The one common goal all Passion Parties consultants share is to make women feel comfortable about their sexual health, to dispel those age-old myths surrounding sexuality, and to help our customers learn ways on how to build stronger relationships with their partners.
So the next time you see me ringing your doorbell, you will know, “No, I am not the Avon lady!”
