Entrepreneur Takes A Sweet U-Turn

Judy Pomykata was breathless with excitement. She just got the contract of her life.

Pomykata is a former event planner whose bridal clients kept asking for something different, like an open bar stocked with candy instead of vodka, scotch, wine and beer. She tried it and fell in love with the concept, reports The Orange County Register.

I was always thinking of a way to add something special and different so that guests would remember that special day,” she said. “I had seen in a magazine a candy display and thought how I could put my own touch on it. What could be better than adding some sweetness and memories for everyone to enjoy?”

“I wanted to be one of the vendors and do something really creative that reflected my own flair,” she said, explaining why she closed the wedding planning business to open Classic Candy Buffet, based in her Yorba Linda home.

People who haven’t been to a wedding in a while might imagine a couple of crystal dishes full of pastel colored mints. Pomykata and other candy bar creators lay out lavish displays of draped fabrics and artistic glassware full of chocolate, Gummy Bears, lemon drops, nuts, popcorn, taffy, suckers, licorice and caramels. Pricing is about $4 per person, which includes color-coordinated bags into which guests scoop the candies of their choice.

In the three years Pomykata has been creating candy buffets, she has expanded into birthday parties, baby showers, bar mitzvahs, private parties and corporate events.
