Franchising Will Help Scale Social Enterprises

A common theme in the world of social enterprise is the myriad challenges social enterprises face to reaching scale. Explanations for this phenomenon include a lack of available financing, a shortfall of business acumen and expertise among social enterprise practitioners, and the common need for social enterprises to address problems unique to a specific region. Although social businesses like CaféDirect and Divine Chocolate, and micro-finance firms like SKS Microfinance have managed to scale successfully, many social enterprises remain very limited in scope.

In order to address this problem, the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) and the Social Enterprise Coalition (SEC) have launched a new initiative which will lend encouragement and support to social enterprises seeking to scale through franchising.
