WJRT-TV reports that a Mid-Michigan mother and son decided unemployment was not for them.
That’s why they started their own business a year ago.
In May 2008, Sue Leja was laid off from her job as vice president of sales for a clock company. Her son Nick graduated from Kettering University a few months later. Last year, their entrepreneurial spirit led them to open a Disc Replay store near Genesee Valley Center.
“It’s a risky step to take. You have to really believe in yourself. The more we talked about it, the more it just seemed to make sense to do it,” Sue said.
“I’ve always had a passion for entrepreneurship just because of the challenges and the flexibility it provides,” Nick admitted.
Disc Replay buys used DVDs, music and video games for resale. When you walk into the store, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of this. Nearly everybody has DVDs and video games that are just collecting dust.
The Lejas used their own savings to finance the venture and chose to buy a franchise rather than start from scratch. “If you’re going to go into business for yourself, you might as well go into something that already has a proven business model. They always say, why reinvent the wheel,” Sue said.
