Anyone Can Make An App Now

Have you ever wanted to make your own app? APC Mag discusses the upside to Google’s new App Inventor for Android.

Millions of years of human evolution had come to this: a picture of a cat that meows and vibrates the phone when you touch the screen. It was a small victory – and one to which I had, admittedly, been guided by Google’s well-written tutorials – but the immensity of the accomplishment was not diminished by my friends’ puzzled stares.

It was proof positive that App Inventor means anybody can make apps for their smartphones. (I must, of course, qualify this statement: App Inventor is not simple to use, although it’s miles easier than learning Java. And it’s not quick to use: if you’re not big on patience or trial-and-error experimentation, you may want to give it a miss entirely.)

But if you’re someone whose enthusiasm has been piqued by the possibilities that Android provides, and if you’d like to try your hand at building your own smartphone apps, Google has provided, in App Inventor, a robust development environment that is (although it may not seem like it to begin with) the first smartphone programming tool that’s conquerable by mere mortals.
